On the way. We've made some significant enhancements to the latest
version of the operating-system software. Should show up in software
titles this spring. Faster booting, better file-clustering layout
optimization, and a new "near-zero seek latency" file interleaver.

Up to the developers...

This is something that we decided was best left to the individual
application developer - the operating system doesn't try to do it
(except for a cache of file descriptors and directories, to speed up
file opening).
A 3DO system has 3 megs of RAM, and application developers want the use
of every byte of it that they can get. A CD-ROM contains over 600 megs.
There just isn't a lot of spare memory for a CD-ROM cache.
I couldn't figure out a general-purpose way to do CD-ROM data cacheing
within the operating system, which would have only an insignificant
impact on the operating system memory footprint, and would be effective
enough to do anybody any good. A game application has a _much_ better
ability to predict which information it's likely to need again (and
cache it) than the operating system can. Hence, we felt it was better
to leave the memory in the hands of the application designers, and let
them make the best use of it that they can.

Hard to do until the DVD standard solidifies a bit.

Should be enough to keep us busy!
